The Scripps Research Institute – Buddy Taub Center

The Taub Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Center is Delawie’s third major NMR center for The Scripps Research Institute. The facility houses five NMR spectrometers. The largest, at 900 MHz, was the largest Bruker magnet in the United States at the time of installation. NMR instruments generate high magnetic fields, presenting significant design challenges. A key requirement was containing the largest magnet’s two gauss lines within the building. The result is a large open magnet room where ferrous materials were virtually eliminated. Fiberglass slab and foundation reinforcing was used, along with a nonmetallic access platform for researchers. Because large NMRs are incompatible with many light types, large light tubes, measuring over 40 feet long, were used with ballasts located away from the magnets.
