SCALE is a startup accelerator that provides funding to exceptional companies developing technology for urban innovation. SCALE partners with prominent local city officials, universities and corporations to provide \u201csmart citizens\u201d with the resources to tackle urban problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDesign thinking is critical to creating smart city solutions,\u201d said Mich\u00e8le Morris. \u201cDesign thinking involves group thinking for a multi-faceted approach that really looks to find the root of city problems.\u201d The talk was held at one of San Diego\u2019s premier co-working spaces,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.downtownworks.com\/\">Downtown Works<\/a>, and moderated by Daniel Obodovski, co-author of\u00a0<i>The Silent Intelligence: The Internet of Things<\/i>, a book about the upcoming technology revolution. Mr. Obodovski was formerly the director of business development at Qualcomm and director of strategic marketing and business development at Motorola Germany. During the event, Morris and Horowitt helped clarify how startups can utilize human-centered design thinking and smart-city solutions to address urban problems.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1349\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/designlab.ucsd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Scalesd2.png?resize=980%2C520\" alt=\"\" width=\"980\" height=\"520\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The talk also included a lively discussion on how human-centered design can be applied to smart city technologies such as sensors, networks, data analytics, machine learning and robotics. Morris and Obodovski explained how these technologies are leading to new \u201csmart city solutions\u201d for transportation, parking, sustainability, climate action and open data city projects and proposals.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1351\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/designlab.ucsd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Scalesd3.png?resize=980%2C551\" alt=\"\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were thrilled to have Mich\u00e8le Morris and Design Lab join us to help further our understanding of urban innovation and design,&#8221; said Obodovski. &#8220;At SCALE, we set our focus on helping entrepreneurs and start-up companies get to the next level in the urban innovation space.
