{"id":924,"date":"2018-04-03T15:38:46","date_gmt":"2018-04-03T15:38:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev-design-lab.pantheonsite.io\/?p=924"},"modified":"2018-05-02T17:02:28","modified_gmt":"2018-05-02T17:02:28","slug":"design-lab-ucsd-spaces-strive-for-educational-equity-through-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/3lectrik.com\/designlab\/design-lab-ucsd-spaces-strive-for-educational-equity-through-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Design Lab &#038; UCSD Spaces strive for Educational Equity Through Design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who better to learn about good design than the people who will most benefit from it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was the driving idea behind the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/designlab.ucsd.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UC San Diego Design Lab\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> decision to participate in the 15<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> annual Summer Summit, a summer residential program coordinated by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/spaces.ucsd.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SPACES<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the Student Promoted Access Center for Education and Service). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students in the program come from first generation low-income, immigrant and refugee families and represent diverse populations such as young women, Native Americans, LGBT, and students with disabilities. \u00a0The students &#8212; 72 of whom saw presentations by Design Lab researchers &#8212; also represent various San Diego schools, such as Gompers Preparatory Academy and Morse High School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is a big push to make San Diego a design city,\u201d noted Joseph Ruanto-Ramirez, \u00a0the Access Programs Advisor of SPACES. \u00a0\u201cThese students are the populations that researchers are going to be interacting with. \u00a0Some students may have never heard of design or cognitive science as a major so I wanted to expose them [to] various skills and programs they can probably play around with in the future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Design Lab\u2019s Colleen Emmenegger, for example, presented the work she and a team led by UC San Diego Professor Jim Hollan are doing on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/designlab.ucsd.edu\/people-centered-automation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">autonomous vehicles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0Emmenegger described her group\u2019s data collection techniques before discussing how they were going to further research by using a Wizard-Of-Oz research approach (where a human performs a task that appears to be controlled by a computer) to learn how pedestrians, human drivers, and bicyclists respond to driverless cars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vineet Pandey, also of the Design Lab, presented on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/designlab.ucsd.edu\/gutinstinct\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gut Instinct<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a new online learning platform that enables people to simultaneously ask and answer questions and learn about the gut microbiome. \u00a0\u201cI thought my project was a good fit,\u201d he said, \u201cbecause coming from a computer science background, I could tell them that online education is changing and by the time they go to college or go to graduate school, they might be taking a lot of classes online. \u00a0Gut Instinct and similar tools are supposed to inspire them and tell them more about health and the microbiome to spark some curiosity in them, so that they could follow up on it and can read more into it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf they\u2019re excited about the kind of work that we\u2019re doing, then they might be excited enough to put the effort into school and looking for financial support and getting into college,\u201d said Emmenegger.\u201d \u00a0I think it\u2019s more inspirational than actually teaching design. \u00a0It\u2019s about getting them excited so that they\u2019re actually willing to put the effort into going further in their education.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Added Ruanto-Ramirez: \u201cThese are actual students from those communities that might go into design and know what the community has gone through, what they\u2019ve struggled with, and what can benefit them, so there is an actual voice in the community and framework for their individual community to survive as the city moves forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Who better to learn about good design than the people who will most benefit from it?
