{"id":927,"date":"2018-04-03T15:39:36","date_gmt":"2018-04-03T15:39:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev-design-lab.pantheonsite.io\/?p=927"},"modified":"2018-04-28T01:55:17","modified_gmt":"2018-04-28T01:55:17","slug":"design-lab-helps-lead-self-driving-car-workshop-with-experts-from-nissan-toyota","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/3lectrik.com\/designlab\/design-lab-helps-lead-self-driving-car-workshop-with-experts-from-nissan-toyota\/","title":{"rendered":"Design Lab Helps Lead Self-Driving Car Workshop with Experts from Nissan &#038; Toyota"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Silicon Valley and Detroit automakers have been given the thumbs up from the U.S. Department of Transportation to begin bringing driverless vehicles to the road, important questions remain. \u00a0Even the word \u201csafe\u201d itself is still up for debate within this context &#8212; does a \u201csafe\u201d driverless car mean one that operates flawlessly, or merely one that operates better than a human driver would?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a meeting of the minds aimed at delineating design-oriented requisites for driverless cars, the Design Lab at UC San Diego hosted an automation workshop in San Francisco over the summer. \u00a0The workshop was geared towards researchers, equipment manufacturers and other professionals in the field of external automated vehicle communications with human road users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Design Lab\u2019s Colleen Emmenegger \u00a0was joined by Jane Lappin of Toyota and Melissa Cefkin from Nissan for the experts\u00a0workshop, which focused on the communications\u00a0problems created when\u00a0highly automated vehicles\u00a0operate\u00a0among human-driven vehicles and \u201cvulnerable road users\u201d such as pedestrians, bicyclists, and skateboarders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1341\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/designlab.ucsd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Webpress-slideshow-3-cropped.png?resize=861%2C492\" alt=\"\" width=\"861\" height=\"492\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis was the first time we pulled together in one room\u00a0several\u00a0OEMs, designers, and\u00a0university\u00a0researchers who passionately agree that AV external HMI\u00a0(external human machine interaction) needs\u00a0to\u00a0be harmonized to\u00a0avoid major confusion\u00a0among road users, with the potential for\u00a0serious impacts on safety, societal trust, and network operations,\u201d Emmenegger said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presenters and attendees included professionals from Nissan, Ford, Duke University, and Stanford, as well as other researchers in the automation industry. \u00a0The conference helped the experts align to define the problem space around autonomous vehicles regarding other road users. \u00a0It also assisted in identifying knowledge and research gaps and\u00a0establishing a foundation for future discussion towards the development of safe, consistent, reliable, and substantially harmonized e-HMI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers had three minutes to present their ongoing research, current findings, and planned research. Punctuated by short discussions, the presentations allowed participants to discuss goals and challenges within the automation industry. \u00a0They were organized into two research clusters: 1) problem\u00a0understanding and 2)\u00a0e-HMI Solution\u00a0Testing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe goal\u00a0of the lightning-round session\u00a0was to\u00a0quickly\u00a0create a shared view of the\u00a0e-HMI\u00a0issues\u00a0as understood today,\u201d Emmenegger added. \u00a0\u201cWe did not want to make this one day we had together to be just listening to presentations &#8212; we really wanted this to be a\u00a0working\u00a0session, with lots of discussion to move ideas forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emmenegger\u2019s hope is that this workshop will result in the standardization of AV interfaces across all vehicles.
