{"id":942,"date":"2018-04-03T15:43:21","date_gmt":"2018-04-03T15:43:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev-design-lab.pantheonsite.io\/?p=942"},"modified":"2018-05-02T19:14:50","modified_gmt":"2018-05-02T19:14:50","slug":"how-diy-designers-are-impacting-healthcare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/3lectrik.com\/designlab\/how-diy-designers-are-impacting-healthcare\/","title":{"rendered":"How DIY Designers are Impacting Healthcare"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\">[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#WeAreNotWaiting is the social media movement of folks in the diabetes community who have come together to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/23\/health\/a-do-it-yourself-revolution-in-diabetes-care.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hack their own health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; they\u2019re developing platforms and apps and cloud-based solutions, and reverse-engineering existing, commercial products to help people with diabetes better utilize technology and health data for improved outcomes. And they are organized; in the form of groups such as <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nightscoutfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nightscout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/openaps.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> OpenAPS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u00a0these people have emerged as design leaders in the global DIY diabetes community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hosted a panel discussion at Design Forward in October to learn more about the #WeAreNotWaiting movement &#8211; how real people are really being impacted &#8211; and how commercial companies are responding. Panelists included OpenAPS founder Dana Lewis; DIY family patient member Clayton McCook; and Tandem Diabetes Chief Commercial Officer Brian Hansen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3598\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/designlab.ucsd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/HYH2.png?resize=976%2C731\" alt=\"\" width=\"976\" height=\"731\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image: L to R: Steph Habif, Dana Lewis, Clayton McCook, Brian Hansen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How does someone begin hacking their health?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dana, who lives with Type 1 diabetes, began by talking with the technology manufacturers a few years ago. She had a very real problem: the alarms on her insulin pump were not loud enough to wake her during night time sleep. Meaning, if her blood sugar dipped to lethal levels while she was sleeping, she would not hear the alert. And there was no way to increase that noise on her pump at that time. Dana went to the commercial companies, \u201cWhat can you do, can you make it better?\u201d She said the responses she received included, \u00a0\u201cIt works for most people\u201d and \u201cwe are working on the next version which should be available in a few years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afraid she might die while she was waiting, Dana looked to social media. Turns out she wasn\u2019t the only one who needed better personalization from her technology. She discovered a few other people living with diabetes had solved this problem by hacking into commercially available systems. Dana reached out and they shared and continued to refine code so that they could write their own scripts for how their systems work. Separate from commercially available systems. His daughter Lily was diagnosed at age three and is now nine years old. \u201cWe started off with one commercial product that worked fairly well, but when Lily wasn\u2019t near us &#8211; at school or at the park &#8211; we didn\u2019t know what was happening. Nightscout developed a system that enables parents or any caregiver to monitor a loved one with diabetes from afar. When I learned that, I knew I had to have it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is a lot of encouragement in the #WeAreNotWaiting community. At the core is altruism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clayton further explained, \u201cI was really scared. I\u2019m not an engineer, I\u2019ve never written a line of code, I still find my mind boggled with all of the amazing work happening. Dana and the rest of the community was so supportive; and now my daughter finds herself in range 90% of the time. She\u2019s happy, she\u2019s healthy, and when she goes to school I don\u2019t worry about her.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3602\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/designlab.ucsd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/HYH6.png?resize=401%2C535\" alt=\"\" width=\"401\" height=\"535\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image: Lily, Clayton, Olivia, and Cindy McCook. The McCooks are active members of the #WeAreNotWaiting movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How are commercial diabetes companies responding to the DIY community?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs the commercial guy,\u201d said Brian, \u201cI like what Dana and the community are doing because it puts pressure on us, it puts pressure on the FDA to get there faster. This is raising the bar for what we have to design and bring to market as fast as possible. There is no space in healthcare more passionate than the diabetes space.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One differentiator between the DIY community and commercial companies is on-demand customer support. \u201cWe have a 24\/7 support system available to the patients who use our devices\u201d confirmed Brian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI know that the community wants us to open our systems; the newest commercially available systems cannot be customized by DIY users. As an FDA approved device, we can\u2019t do that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3603\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/designlab.ucsd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/HYH7.png?resize=976%2C760\" alt=\"\" width=\"976\" height=\"760\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image: Tandem Diabetes X2 insulin pump<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What about the FDA?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OpenAPS and Nightscout regularly communicate with the FDA. Dana explained, \u201cWe have talked with them and they understand why we are doing what we are doing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The #WeAreNotWaiting community is not doing anything commercial. No money is changing hands.
