MICROGRID ELECTRICAL AND SCADA INFRASTRUCTURE FOR TWENTYNINE PALMS

Michael Wall Engineering provided design-build electrical construction documents for the technologically advanced electrical infrastructure improvements to Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) Twentynine Palms. This massive base covering 998-square miles in the Mojave Desert provides live fire arms training and support facilities for up to 25,000 Navy and civilian personnel. The project provided essential electrical power and SCADA infrastructure upgrades to support energy independence on the base.

This $140 million design-build project (P127) provided microgrid infrastructure and included the design and construction of base-wide electrical improvements at MCAGCC Twentynine Palms. System design included:

  • New 34.5KV Main Service Entrance with three (3) SCE circuits.
  • New Primary 34.5kV–12.47kV 5000kVA Unit Substation.
  • Over 18 miles of overhead/underground Fiber Optic SCADA control
loop using 24-strand Single Mode fiber.
  • Fiber Optic terminal cabinets at more than 60 locations to allow for
    splicing and device connections.
  • Ethernet switches and Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) were
designed at every Fiber Optic terminal cabinet.
  • Overhead power distribution and control at 34.5kV and 12.47kV.
  • Relay selection, application, setting, and SCADA communications.

A new 100kW photovoltaic system was included as a betterment to this project and designed by MWE.
