In recognition of International Women’s Day, we’re excited to share the final installment of our…
2021 National Intern Day: Celebrating Our Biggest Group of Interns to Date!
While the past year has thrown us many challenges, our interns have been hard at work at their remote workstations across the West Coast. This year, our team took on 11 interns in roles that range from engineering (water, wastewater, bridge, and roadway), to construction management, to marketing and graphic design. Even though we haven’t been able to work together in person as much as we have in the past, we’re excited to share this virtual journey with each of our interns and thrilled to see them grow in their careers. Check out where all our interns are located!

Internship Hiring Process
Murraysmith + Quincy is proud to offer internships to a wide variety of students each year. One way we find our high-caliber interns is through the Multiple Engineering Cooperative Program (MECOP) program. Offered through local universities, this program connects students with both public agencies and private companies for two semesters of paid, full-time internships across industries, including manufacturing, electronics, construction, and civil infrastructure. Our teams also consistently visit college career fairs to connect with students on internship opportunities.
Retaining Our High-Performing Interns
Why is Murraysmith + Quincy taking on more interns than ever before? It’s so we can help foster the next generation of professionals in our industry and work with talented newcomers who shape our culture and company trajectory. Plus, we get to see how well the work style and goals of the intern and our team fit, so we can hire people into permanent positions who make a natural addition to our team. In fact, Murraysmith + Quincy has hired around 85% of our interns after their internship concluded! Nick Lafrenz and Scott Sinclair are just two examples—here’s what they have to say about their time interning with Murraysmith + Quincy.
Nick Lafrenz, Wastewater Engineering Designer, Portland
Murraysmith + Quincy was my second MECOP internship after interning with a public utility. Interning for a private consultant firm allowed me to broaden my view of civil engineering beyond water supply systems to wastewater, stormwater, and transportation design. I was exposed to a variety of interesting projects, all with different challenges and opportunities that helped to grow my skillset. I was fortunate to be mentored by two great engineers in our pumping group, Adam Crafts and Eddie Kreipe, who both guided me through successful projects from start to finish. The atmosphere and company culture that Murraysmith + Quincy has developed made me feel like a member of the team from day one. When my internship was over, it was an easy decision to stay on at the company and jump into my career as a civil engineer.”
Scott Sinclair, EIT, Roadway Assistant Engineer, Salem
The internship I had here at the Murraysmith + Quincy Salem office was better than I could have hoped for coming out of my senior year at Oregon State University. Not only was the work being done of the highest quality by highly competent professionals, but there was also a family atmosphere where we could joke around and have some laughs together. Everyone was eager to answer questions and help keep me going in a productive direction. I learned so much through my first six months here as an intern, from drafting, to complex 3D roadway modeling, to small bridge design. The scope of work that I was exposed to really made me appreciate the possibilities that this career had to offer. The expertise of this staff, the individual training given, and the encouragement to ask questions are more than enough to give a willing intern a quality internship. Just a few months before I started, I would not have expected that I would pursue a career as a roadway engineer, but though the mentorship and opportunities offered by my group, I am just a few months from being licensed and can’t imagine doing anything different.”
A huge thank you to all our interns for the passion and dedication you bring to the team every day!
