Hannah Mason Pump Station Dedication Ceremony
This morning, we celebrated the completion of Portland Water Bureau’s newest drinking water pump station! Congrats, project team!
The Hannah Mason Pump Station is located in Willamette Park, a waterfront recreation area that is important to the southwest Portland community.
Portland Water Bureau employees, City commissioners, a neighborhood committee member, and a Mason family representative all presented at the event and were excited to welcome the beautiful new building to the park. One City commissioner claimed, “It’s the best-looking pump station I’ve ever seen!”
The new station not only looks great, it’s energy efficient and mindfully built. An eco-roof, efficient pumps and valves, and countless other upgrades enables Portland to reduce energy costs by $163,000 a year! The designs also recognized that it is sited on a floodplain, locating pumps and electrical equipment on the second story in the case of a flood.
Who is Hannah Mason and why name a pump station after her?
She was a philanthropist, landowner, and wife to an early Portland mayor, William S. Mason. When she passed in 1908, she owned a majority of the land that makes up Willamette Park.
