Happy International Women’s Day!
International Women’s Day celebrates the achievements of women and raises awareness about gender equity around the world. Murraysmith + Quincy is proud to tell the stories of some of the amazing women whose work and accomplishments help make our company successful—not just on International Women’s Day, but all year long. That’s why we’re kicking off a new series, with career stories and words of wisdom from women across our team.
Meet Celeste Alvarez, Controller at Murraysmith + Quincy
How did find yourself on this career path? Murraysmith hired me as a part-time receptionist in 1987. As the company grew, the support team broke off into departments. My focus was to continue learning and providing value to keep up with the needs of the company. Finance seemed like a natural progression, so I went to night school and earned a finance degree while continuing to work full time, start a family, and raise two children. I am thankful to have a supportive partner who helped fill the holes at home during that time.
What is the most rewarding part of what you do? I have always loved working with engineers. They are smart, clever, and care about making things better. I really enjoy the team I work with and the diversity of team members that growth has provided. I learn so much just having conversations with others. With all of the growth and change within the company, there is also always a new challenge in my role.
What is something you’ve done in your career that you’re really proud of? I am proud of the career progression I have made and being able to demonstrate to my daughters the benefits of diligence and perseverance.
What advice do you have for girls and women who are interested in your field? If you have something to say—speak up! And if you are not comfortable speaking up, find mentors, confidants, people you can talk to, bounce things off of, get additional perspective, and support your path!
